Our guides are bowhunters who are very knowledgeable and experienced in the Sapphire Mountains and can take clients to appropriate areas where bow hunting is the greatest. We always field dress, cape and pack out any game that has been taken. It is our job to ensure you the best quality hunt anywhere. Hunting is open for either sex Elk, White-Tail Buck or Doe, and Mule Deer Buck by draw. Two Bear Outfitters embraces the challenges of archery hunting. There is nothing in the world like calling and engaging a trophy bull on their own terms. Over the years we have taken many bulls with persistence and dedication to the art of elk calling. We take special pride in our strategy and work ethics both in the field, and practicing in the off season. We take our calling seriously and it shows come autumn. Since all the guides are also archery hunters, including the outfitter, we know precisely what it takes to get the bull where we need him. We evaluate our setups, call scenarios, travel routes, feeding areas, and wallow activity after every day afield. We also take great pride in showing and teaching our hunters whatever they want to know. It is common place for us to explain what we are doing, what we are saying, and why we are making the calls we are. One fully-guided hunt with Two Bear Outfitters can take years off the learning curve for new elk hunters! We understand the value of persistence when archery hunting. Many pieces and parts have to come together for a bull to be taken, and we are committed to making that dream a reality. Every outfitter has their own philosophy and culture with regard to archery elk hunting. At Two Bear Outfitters we believe that aggressive hunting and calling techniques are the most effective. We do not sit on the ridge and "hope" we get a response. We go out and make sure we get a response. We do not hang around camp and hunt the mornings and evenings, we run ridges dropping locates to find the bulls, and in the midday typically set up on one of the many wallows our area affords. We are very aggressive elk hunters and believe that concept is fundamental to success in the field. That doesn't mean you have to hike several miles a day, but you do have to be ready to go. It is very common to hear bulls bugling all night right from your tent in camp! We know that not all archers are prepared for the rigors of ridge running and hole dropping. For those folks who simply cannot physically do that type of hunt, we have many blinds on wallows, and elk action very close to camp. We can accommodate any skill level or physical limitations. We ask only that we know up front what you think you can do, and we can plan a hunt accordingly. The thrill of taking a huge bull with archery tackle is second to none, and we want all participants to have a great shot at this feeling. At Two Bear, we spend most of the year talking about, pursuing, or watching elk. When not on the mountain, we are attending seminars, exchanging notes, and talking about calling. When you pay your hard earned money for a guided archery elk hunt, you deserve to have guides and staff that know precisely what they are doing. You deserve to hunt with professionals who take their job seriously, and have great pride in their calling ability. While we can't guarantee a trophy bull, we can guarantee that every effort will be given on our clients' behalf. So come and join us and discover the thrill of a high mountain backcountry elk camp. As always, we are willing to talk elk!!

The antelope hunt usually starts the first Saturday in October. The area we hunt is located about 60 miles southeast of Colorado Springs or 30 miles south of Yoder, Colorado. Our objective during this hunt is to find a quality animal to harvest. Our goal is to harvest a buck that is 14 inches in length or better. Generally a 14-inch buck will score between a 74 and 78 with average mass on their horns. A B&C buck scores at 80 inches and 82 all time, so we are after the trophies. This is a three day antelope hunt with generally four hunters in camp at a time. The hunter to guide ratio is 2:1. Most all of our hunting is spot and stalk; we cover about 15, 000 acres and see a lot of game. Most of the terrain is flat with some rolling hills, which can mean a good amount of crawling in some situations. Shots can range from 100 to 400 yards. The more you practice the more comfortable you will be at long ranges which makes the hunt more versatile. Antelope are a thin-hided game so leave the elk loads at home, a ballistic silver tip or a soft point work great on antelope. High weight retention bullets have a tendency to pin whole antelope. This is a fully guided hunt so the guides are with you the entire hunt. We do this so we can work to find you an animal that you would like to harvest. It takes time to judge the size of these animals especially when looking through a spotting scope over a mile away. This hunt is fully catered. We supply all the food and prepare meals. The only items we do not supply are beverages other than milk and water. Antelope Hunting Rates: Cost of tag not included in price - non-resident $364, Resident $34 Habitat stamp required $10 Antelope Rifle Season Oct. 4 - 10 *We offer a three day hunt within these dates. Call to book your days. Deposit: $1000 Money due upon arrival: $1250 Total: = $2250 Antelope Archery Season Aug. 15 - Sept. 20: $800 December Doe Season *It is a one day hunt: $400 Land Owner Vouchers We are in a unit that is a draw only so we draw the landowner tags and send you a voucher. We will generally get the vouchers in the middle of June. When we receive the voucher we will send it to you and you’ll have to send it in to the Division of Wildlife to receive a tag with your name on it. We do not provide the cost of the tag. Out of state tags cost around $354. Deposits (see amount above) are due upon receiving land vouchers. Lodging You will stay in a bunkhouse, which is the homestead on the ranch. It sleeps four. There are four beds but you do need to bring a sleeping bag. Hunting Gear Guides will be with you probably 95% of the time so we will have most everything you need in a hunting situation, but we still recommend you bring everything on this list: Binoculars Range finders if you have them Knife Rifle: 243 is the smallest caliber allowed in Colorado with at least an 80 grain bullet. We recommend rifles be single shot or bolt action. Bullets silver tip or soft point Knee pads/ leather gloves Appropriate clothing (Temperature can vary this time of year from 20 degrees to 80 degrees) Sleeping bag Orange vest and hat Shooting sticks or bipod

By Colorado Parks and Wildlife The popular hunting magazines often display colorful photographs of huge bull elk standing in open meadows presenting easy targets. The reality in the mountains of Colorado, however, is far different. Stalking the wapiti is challenging and most hunters wont get easy shots. Youre more likely to find elk on a steep hillside, in a dark ravine, or in thick timber than standing out in the open. The hunter success rate for all manners of take in Colorado was 19 percent in 2014, and a total of 42, 000 were harvested. A total of 218, 000 hunters went after elk last season. It's estimated that there are about 280, 000 elk in Colorado, the most of any state. If weather is warm, elk stay spread out over vast areas at high elevations at and above timberline. In those conditions hunters need to work extra hard. When snow falls, elk will usually start to move, bunch up, and look for food sources at lower elevations or on slopes where vegetation is exposed. However, the snow fall must be significant; usually more than a foot of snow must be on the ground to get elk moving. Hunters must get off their OHVs and hunt slowly and quietly far from any road. Elk are very smart, move quickly at any hint of danger and hide in rugged terrain. Compounding the challenge for hunters is the fact that elk typically gather in groups of 10 or more. If one is spooked they all move and they can run easily for a mile or more. Elk are most active during the night and are likely to be grazing in transition areas-meadows next to heavy timber, where different types of vegetation meet and just above or below ridgelines. Hunters should watch these areas at first light and at dusk. During the day, hunters need to move into the dark timber-cool north-facing slopes-and not be hesitant to hunt in difficult areas. Hunters should move as quietly as possible for short distances and then scan the woods for 10 minutes or more before moving again. Even in dense forest its a good idea to use binoculars so you can discern subtle movement or unusual colors in the trees. If you find the areas where animals graze at night its likely that youll find them in adjacent areas during the day. When hunting in areas with roads, move far above or far below the roads to find elk. In areas where two roads are in close proximity, locate the most difficult terrain in between. Line up your shot carefully because elk are difficult to knock down. The best shots are delivered in the critical area of the lungs and heart just behind and below the front quarters. Never try for a head shot, as this can result in only wounding the animal. To learn more about hunting elk, check out "Elk Hunting University" on the Colorado Parks and Wildlife web site: This program gives extensive information regarding all phases of elk hunting: cpw.state.co.us/learn/Pages/EHU.aspx.

Archery Elk and Mule Deer Hunting Archery hunting at Nine Mile is fabulous! Our bow hunters experience nearly 100% shot opportunity rates on legal bulls (4 points or better on one side). In our area, either-sex private-land archery elk tags are available over the counter. In the mornings we typically walk and call, and you can expect to hear numerous bulls bugling each morning. In fact, when conditions are right, it's not uncommon to hear nearly a dozen bulls a day. In the evenings, we sit on one of many strategically placed tree stands or platform stands watching wallows, water holes, or agricultural fields. All stands are placed with the hunter's best opportunities in mind and provide close-up encounters with the elk. Our guides are archers themselves and know what it takes to get you in close to that bull you've been waiting for and get you a good close shot. Many of our archery hunters have several opportunities at legal bulls in the course of a 5-day hunt. The physical demands on this hunt are fairly easy, as far as elk hunting goes, but you should be prepared to walk 1-3 miles a day at an elevation of 7000'- 8000'. All hunters are asked to be proficient shooting fixed-blade broadheads out to at least 30 yards. Most shots are close, but the more comfortable you are at shooting out to 30 yards, the better your chances of success will be. If you've hunted other places and found slow action in archery season, then this is the place to come. We've got elk! Bowhunting for mule deer is available on a limited basis at Nine Mile, so if you're interested, please contact us for availability. Wounding Policy: If you wound an animal (draw blood), every attempt will be made to recover the animal. If it is not recovered, then your hunt will be over.

Most outdoor sports enthusiasts never realize it, but they help maintain the wildlife resources in their state through the excise taxes on fishing tackle, firearms, ammo, motor boat fuel, and associated outdoor equipment. Known as the Pittman Robertson Act, officially called Federal Aid in Wildlife Restoration, this act was the first tax imposed on outdoor sporting equipment. That was back in 1937, and its effect is seen today on burgeoning populations of whitetail deer, turkeys, and elk.; Then in 1950, the Sportfish Restoration Act was passed, and it had a bit of a different effect. The money that was passed to the individual states was used to improve facilities, gain access to previously closed lakes and rivers, and fund angler education programs. Colorado’s portion of these funds comes to roughly eleven million dollars every year. The distribution of these funds from the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service is based on the land area and number of licensed hunters in each state. Sportfish Restoration Dollars returned to the states are based on the land and water area and number of license holders. Big Game Hunting Elk Hunting in Colorado is a sport that helps keep our wildlife populations in check. You can purchase a bull elk license over the counter in Colorado, one of the only states that offer this service during the 2nd and 3rd rifle season. During the 2007 big game seasons 227, 262, hunters killed 49, 012 for a 22 percent success rate. Deer Deer hunters in Colorado harvested the highest number of deer since 1997 with 98, 283 hunters killing 45, 026 deer for a 46 percent success rate in 2007. Small Game Hunting Small game species profile information is conveniently linked off of the Small Game Dates and Fees page by clicking on the specific species names. In addition, a few of these species have hunting tips provided by biologists. Mountain Lion Required Mountain Lion Education Certificate: It is illegal to obtain a mountain lion license or hunt lions without a mountain lion education certificate issued by the Division of Wildlife, attesting successful completion of the DOW’s certified lion education and identification course. Hunters must carry the certificate while hunting lions. Information about the course is available at Mountain Lion Education and Identification Course or DOW offices. Turkey Spring turkey season begins on April 12th and end dates vary depending on game management unit. The deadline for applying for limited spring turkey licenses has passed. Waterfowl At this time of year, most outdoors enthusiasts believe that their hunting days are over until fall. The small game seasons have ended or are in their final stages, spring turkey season is several weeks away and the peak of spring fishing on the plains is still a few months in the distance. Where to go? Bakerville ACRES: 320 OPEN: September 1 to February 28. Year round for fishing. HUNTING: Elk, deer, mountain lion, bighorn sheep, black bear, blue grouse, ptarmigan, rabbits, snowshoe hares

Welcome to the elk hunting 101 guide! This guide was designed to help educate both novice and experienced hunters on the basic art of hunting elk. Our website contains a wealth of information related to elk hunting and this guide will link to other parts of our website for continued research. While we like to think of this as a definitive guide on elk hunting, it's more a primer that helps direct your research into elk hunting. If you would like to add something to this guide or report any inaccurate information please contact us. If at any time a link takes you off this page to somewhere else on our website and you want to return you can use our site navigation menu on the near-top right of every web page. Just click on elk hunting 101 and you'll return right back to this guide. We hope after reading this you are able to go out and have a fun, successful elk hunt. If you'd like to see the success that other hunters had when hunting elk head on over to our elk hunting photo archive. However if you're ready to learn how to hunt elk then you should get started below! Learn About Elk One of the smartest things you could do before you go on an actual elk hunt is to learn more about elk. By knowing a few simple things about elk, like diet and habitat preferences, it can help give you an edge. Very few hunters actually spend the time to educate themselves on the species of animal they are hunting. Most professional and successful hunters spend hours upon hours of researching studying their prey. Head over to our article on elk and learn more about your future elk trophy today! The Right Elk Hunting Rifle One of the first things you'll need to do is choose the right elk hunting rifle for your elk hunt. If you're a bow hunter you'll want to read our archery elk hunting guide. If you're a rifle hunter you'll want to read our in depth elk hunting rifle guide. It's very important that you choose the right rifle or bow when you're hunting elk. Both our elk hunting rifle guide and archery elk hunting guide will give you the knowledge you need to make the best choice. Be careful choosing the rifle or bow that is recommended by a friend or family member. Yes, that weapon choice might be perfect for them but the worst for you. However, you might be able to get the friend or family member making the recommendation to let you test theirs and see how it works for you. No matter what type of weapon you choose if you cannot take a proper elk kill shot you'll never have success on an elk hunt. By reading our elk shot placement article you'll learn how to properly and humanely shoot an elk. Follow Hunting Regulations Before you even think of going hunting you need to educate yourself on local hunting laws and regulations. Every single state in the United States of America has a department that manages and enforces hunting laws. These regulations are put into place to protect the population of animals that are hunted and to help managed the growth and culling of those populations. Without proper oversight and regulation hunters would destroy animal populations and leave nothing for future generations. It's also important to know that if you are caught hunting illegally you would be considered a poacher and could face stiff fines and time in jail. You will always need a hunting license and special permit or tag to hunt elk. If you're unsure of local hunting laws you can head over to our hunting laws and regulations archive where you can access all the information you need to get current hunting laws. Learn How to Hunt Elk From here you'll want to ahead over to our article on how to hunt elk in order to learn how to harvest one of these amazing animals. We would like to point out that no matter how much you read it cannot replace the benefit of experience. If you're able to go out on your next elk hunt with a friend who has past elk hunting experience or hire an elk hunting outfitter then do it. You have much more fun with someone who knows what they are doing and that can also increase your chance of harvesting a trophy elk. Elk Hunting Terminology Below are some common terms used by elk hunters on and off the field. Bugle - A sound made by a male elk. Bull - A male elk. Calf - A young elk, male or female. The Bright Angel Trail To hike the Grand Canyon is an experience unto itself. At Arizona River Runners we offer rafting trips with a hike in or a hike out of the Grand Canyon. The Bright Angel Trail hike is required if you are planning to take one of our Hike In or Hike Out rafting trips. It is well maintained, provides spectacular views and is one of the safest trails that you can hike in the Grand Canyon. Drinking water is available at multiple locations (seasonal), as well as shaded rest-houses, rest rooms and a ranger station located mid-way at Indian Gardens. You will hike nearly 4, 400 vertical feet over 7.5 miles (to or from) where Pipe Creek joins the Colorado River just below the River Resthouse. If you are prepared for this hike you will be rewarded; if not, you will find it a demanding experience with possible serious consequences. As required by the National Park Service, Arizona River Runners will provide a hiking guide to accompany each group hiking in or out. This river adventure begins with an early morning required hike into the Canyon on day one of your trip. If you have a history of ankle, knee, hip or leg problems this trip option is probably not for you. Do not underestimate the fitness level required for this hike, even though it is downhill into the Canyon. The average hike in times can range from 4 to 5 hours. We strongly suggest having your bag transported to the river by purchasing the optional mule duffel service. This will allow you to enjoy the trail and views carrying only your basic food, water and optional clothing for the hike. Hiking Out of the Grand Canyon Early morning on the last day of your Colorado River trip you will start the required, strenuous hike out of the Canyon. Most people underestimate the difficulty of hiking out of the Grand Canyon on the Bright Angel Trail. With the additional weight of your river gear, snacks and water in your backpack, combined with the 100 degree summer temperatures of this desert environment, prior physical conditioning is a must to complete this hike. Average hike out times are normally double that of hiking in so you need to plan for the full day to make this journey. This is a very rewarding hike for those that are prepared and you will become part of an elite group that can say they have hiked out of the Grand Canyon from the Colorado River to the South Rim. Facts About the Bright Angel Trail Elevation change from Bright Angel Trailhead to Pipe Creek boat beach is 4, 400 vertical feet. Distance from Bright Angel Trailhead to Pipe Creek boat beach is 7.5 miles. Potable drinking water is available during summer months at Indian Gardens, Three-Mile Resthouse and Mile-an-a Half Resthouse. From mid-October to early May, water is only available at Indian Gardens. Summer temperatures can easily reach into the 100’s during the day.
